George Nelson literally designed the coconut chair after a cross section of a coconut shell. Recognized as one of the founders of mid century modern design, George was known for designing interior furnishing items in the form of elements of nature. The chair itself was conceptualized in 1955 and the very first chair was handcrafted in 1956. The chair has a flowing hammock feel with shallow sides and inviting curves. MAKING THE ICON

In his 1956 design statement for the Coconut chair, George Nelson said it “was developed to give lounge seating comfort together with great freedom of movement.” A Smooth fiberglass shell, the single piece foam rubber cushion and a frame handcrafted of 100% polished stainless steel. These ingredients speak to the standard of craftsmanship used in the Kardiel Coconut Chair reproduction. Much like a coffee table book, the design invites conversation. The chair is organic in form yet hardly shocking coming from George Nelson, a man who lived by his own words “Total design is nothing more or less than a process of relating everything to everything.”
